Volunteers

As a school, we love volunteers and visitors!  For the safety of our children and the integrity of instruction, please remember the following:

û      Parents wishing to volunteer are asked to check with their child’s teacher to determine the best time for them to help.  Special events during the year provide additional opportunities for parents wishing to help in the classroom.

·        Parents wishing to observe in a classroom or meet with their child’s teacher should schedule a convenient time to do so.  Unexpected visits are sometimes disruptive to young students and interfere with instruction.  Teachers are asked to direct unexpected visitors to the office.

·        When volunteering or coming to visit, parents must sign in at the office and get a visitor's pass.  This pass should be worn throughout the visit.  For the safety of our students, all staff members have been asked to question any person not wearing a visitor pass.

Attendance Policy

Corley Elementary School follows attendance and truancy policies set forth by the Boaz City Board of Education.  They are as follows:

û      Approved Absences - Absences caused by illness of the student, death in the student’s immediate family, legal quarantine, weather, poverty, or with special permission of the Principal will be considered excused absences.  Students with excused absences will be permitted to make-up work missed during the absence.

·        After an absence, the student is required to furnish a proper explanation from the parent or guardian as to the reason or cause for the absence (written parent notes, doctor’s excuse, etc. are acceptable - phone calls to the school are not acceptable).

·        If an acceptable explanation is not provided upon the student’s return to school, a form will be sent home requesting an explanation along with any available documentation.  The parent or guardian has three days to provide this information.  If a satisfactory explanation is not furnished to the school, the student will be considered truant for the days he/she was absent.

·        A student is allowed six excused parent notes.  After a student is absent more than six times in a year, a doctor’s excuse will be required for any remaining absences.

û      Absences Approved by Principal - The Principal is authorized to approve for a student to accompany his/her parents or guardians to special events or on special trips that are considered to be of an educational or cultural nature that will enhance or enrich the student’s overall development.  Make-up work will be at the discretion of the Principal.

û      Unexcused Absences - All other absences, except those noted above, are considered unexcused and go under the truancy policy of the Board of Education.  The Board of Education defines truancy as absence from the school for any reason that is not excused or approved.

·        After a student has accumulated three unexcused absences, he/she will be turned in to the Marshall County Attendance Officer.

·        Any student who has accumulated more than ten unexcused absences during the school year will not be promoted to the next grade.

û      Tardy Arrivals - Students are expected to report to school on time.  Students who are tardy must sign the tardy roster in the office.  The principal determines if the tardy is excused or unexcused.  Work missed due to an unexcused tardy may not be made up.  After a fifth tardy, the student will be referred to the principal to seek a solution to the problem.
