Principal’s Message

Families and Friends of Corley Elementary,

If the first few months of school are any indication of the future, I can confidently say that Corley is well on its way to greatness.  Although Corley has experienced many positive changes in previous years, I am proud to share our continued efforts in hopes of becoming a model of academic excellence.

After starting my job in July, one of my first concerns had to do with school safety.  Not only was Corley lacking an updated alarm system, we also lacked a proper security system.  With support from both the Board of Education and Central Office, we now have two fantastic systems in place.  Our security system boasts twelve strategically placed cameras and our fire alarm system comes complete with new pull stations, heat detectors, smoke detectors, and proper emergency lighting.

Another area of concern had to do with facilities.  Although Corley remains an attractive school on the outside, there were a number of items that needed attention.  Our restrooms looked rough, our walls needed painting, our building was filled with clutter, and our music room was in poor condition.  With support from our dedicated custodial staff and an amazing maintenance crew, restrooms were repaired, walls were painted, clutter was removed, and a new facility has been obtained for music.  Other enhancements include a more inviting school entrance.

Although pleased with safety and facility improvements, teachers are even more excited about the recent purchase of new technologies.  After surveying the faculty and meeting with several teams of teachers, the decision was made to purchase twelve Promethean Boards, five laptops, and a set of student responders.  With incredible support from our system technology director and his staff, Corley should have most of these items up and running in the next few weeks.  Teachers have also committed to training that will prepare them to utilize these new technologies to the fullest.

Corley clearly has a great deal to celebrate…and we want you to be part of the celebration.  In fact, we have three special events planned for the month of October.

·        On the evening of October 20th, our doors will open for a special PTO Family Night.  Following a brief meeting at 5:30 p.m., families will be invited to visit classrooms and tour the building.  The library will also be hosting our Fall Book Fair.

·        On the morning of October 24th, our gym doors will open at 7:00 a.m. for our first annual “Buddy” Breakfast.  Students can invite up to two adult buddies (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, guardian, etc.)  Donuts, muffins, juice, and coffee will be provided.

·        On the afternoon of October 31st (yes, the same day as Halloween), Corley will host its first Award’s Day for the 2008-2009 school year.  Students will be recognized for high academic achievement and outstanding character.

o       Second grade ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m.

o       Third grade ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m.
